About Us
Start with a Seedling began in September 2014 as an intergenerational literacy research initiative, organized by Dr. Lyndsay Moffatt, an education professor at the University of Prince Edward Island. Since that time, the program has evolved and grown to address food security concerns in the community. Now, the primary purpose of the Start with a Seedling Program is to connect school aged children to the process of food production—from a seedling in the soil to a meal at the table.
- Connecting producers and consumers Farmers show students how to plant and nurture their crops. Students harvest and learn to cook local produce.
- Intergenerational relationships The program provides community-based food learning experiences through the generous effort of community volunteers or “buddies.”
- “Teach a child to fish” By teaching children the value and skills of producing their own food, the program increases community capacity to address community food security concerns.
